greenhauslogoAs designers, we know that we're in a unique position to create change. In America alone, designers purchase or specify $9.1 billion in printing and paper annually. When you create that much demand for such resource-intensive products and services you have an opportunity and responsibility to make a difference.

InHaus Media's GreenHaus Initiative is our pledge to design sustainably and to: Learn - Engage in the topic of sustainability and seek to understand the issue; Think - Make a sustainable mindset second to nature; Act - Put our knowledge to use in our work; Inform - Share information and build awareness for sustainability; and Unite - Promote understanding and alliance through collective strength.

Design & Sustainability

Designing sustainably doesn't mean quality will be compromised. Sustainable thinking asks us to work smarter and think about our impact more carefully. We will be more targeted in our efforts and focus on your goals more expressly. We have to think strategically instead of traditionally.

Additionally, sustainable materials are often comparable in costs to traditional materials. This effort is about limiting unnecessary waste, not making more of something that would increase costs.

So we encourage you to get in touch with us. Perhaps we can meet and talk about your design efforts for the next year. If we put our heads together, we're sure to find better ways of doing things.

Ways We Save

We use our GreenHaus Initiative Checklist to ensure that we build ecologically sustainable designs, from the ground up. Here are just a few of the ways we attain a sustainable design:

  • Check that a printed piece is the best way to reach your audience
  • Check the potential for multi-purposing. Can one publication serve the purpose of two?
  • Consider the smallest paper size for your job
  • Consider the minimum number of ink colors necessary
  • Choose recycled materials where possible
  • Check that the publication can be re-used and recycled
  • Discuss with printers what design format would minimize paper waste on press
  • Use PDFs for proofing online
  • Print only the required number of copies
  • Include the recycled logo and specify recycled content
